From 22 August to 7 September 2025, the world’s top women’s volleyball teams will gather in Thailand for the 2025 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship. This is the first time the tournament will be hosted in Southeast Asia, with matches taking place in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Nakhon Ratchasima.
Seven decades of volleyball history
The tournament organized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was first held in 1952 in Moscow. In the early decades (since 1970), it was played every four years, much like the football World Cup, but starting from this year it has switched to a two-year cycle.
Over its history, the FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship has seen periods of dominance from various nations, with recent titles claimed by Serbia, the United States, and Italy, each displaying powerful and world-class squads.
Expanded format and structure
- Teams: 32 national teams from across all five continents will compete in an expanded format.
- Competition structure:
- Preliminary round: Eight pools (A–H), each with four teams. Top two teams from each pool advance to the knockout stage.
- Final round: Begins with the Round of 16, followed by Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Championship Final.
Serbia – the winner in both 2018 and 2022 – will return to defend their title against top teams from all over the world. It will surely be a very intense competition filled with top volleyball moments and drama.
