The Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia 2026 takes Formula 1 to the iconic Sepang International Circuit, one of the sport’s most celebrated modern venues. Returning to the calendar after several years away, Sepang once again hosts Formula 1 with its trademark combination of high-speed corners, heavy braking zones, and unpredictable tropical weather.

Widely regarded as one of the most complete circuits in world motorsport, Sepang has produced countless memorable races since its debut and remains a favourite among both drivers and fans.

The Circuit

The Sepang International Circuit opened in 1999 and was one of the first Formula 1 venues designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke. Its success influenced the design of many modern Grand Prix circuits that followed.

  • Length: 5.543 km
  • Laps: 56
  • Total race distance: 310.398 km
  • Fastest lap: 1:34.080 (Sebastian Vettel, 2017)
  • First Formula 1 Grand Prix: 1999

Sepang offers one of the most varied challenges on the Formula 1 calendar. Long straights create overtaking opportunities before heavy braking zones, while fast sweeping corners reward precision and confidence. The famous Turns 5 and 6 demand commitment, and the tight final hairpin leading onto the main straight regularly produces overtaking attempts.

Weather often becomes a decisive factor. High temperatures, intense humidity, and sudden tropical rainstorms can dramatically change track conditions within minutes, making strategy just as important as outright pace.

A Formula 1 Favourite Returns

Since hosting its first Formula 1 race in 1999, Sepang has built a reputation for producing exciting and unpredictable racing. The inaugural event remains one of the most memorable in Formula 1 history, with Michael Schumacher returning from injury to help Ferrari teammate Eddie Irvine, who went on to win the race.

Throughout the years, the circuit has delivered dramatic wheel-to-wheel battles, changing weather conditions, and strategic races that have tested every aspect of a team’s performance. Its return to the Formula 1 calendar brings back one of the championship’s most demanding venues.
