Montreal hosts one of the most unpredictable races of the Formula 1 season, and the Canadian Grand Prix 2026 once again takes place at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, a track where mistakes are punished and races can change in seconds.
Built on Île Notre-Dame, the circuit uses public roads originally created for Expo 67. What started as a temporary solution in 1978 quickly became a permanent home for the race, especially after Gilles Villeneuve secured his first F1 win here.
The Circuit
The Canadian circuit is about braking, acceleration and precision.
- Length: 4.361 km
- Laps: 70
- Total race distance: 305.27 km
- Fastest lap time: 1:13.078 (Valtteri Bottas, 2019)
Drivers face a constant cycle of hard braking zones followed by quick exits, which makes tire management and consistency critical. At the end of the lap sits the famous Wall of Champions, a corner that has caught out some of the biggest names in the sport.
Schedule highlights
The event follows the Sprint format, meaning action is spread across all three days:
- May 22 – Practice 1: 19:30 – 20:30
- May 22 – Sprint Qualifying: 23:30 – 00:14
- May 23 – Sprint: 19:00 – 20:00
- May 23 – Qualifying: 23:00 – 00:00
- May 4 – Race: 23:00
The Canadian Grand Prix 2026 brings together some of the best drivers in Formula 1: experienced champions who know how to handle pressure and younger drivers trying to prove they belong at the top. With tight corners, long straights and very little room for error, this race is one of the most entertaining and unpredictable events of the season.
